Who is allowed to express desire? Whose desires are considered “normal,” and whose desires are suppressed, mocked?
Liquid Latex, as part of her wider Latex series, is Anna Michell’s unrepentant celebration of her desire. It is her subversion of the male gaze, a cathartic and playful exercise in practicing lust, in which she uses her canvas as a space in which to unleash her fantasies and her thirst.
The anonymous male of Liquid Latex is the artist’s muse. By dressing him in latex, she strips him of his individuality, reducing him to a two-dimensional fantasy for her to enjoy at her leisure. He has become her tantalizing idea, one dripping with eroticism, waiting to be consumed.
